Even having seen the documentary years ago and knowing about Klara's story, I could not put this book down once I started reading it. This is such an incredible story about survival and faith. I'm so moved that someone who endured such horrific events could go on to live a life full of beauty, joy, grace and above all gratitude. Everyone should should read this book. If you have a hard time remembering to thank God for everyday - think of Klara Wizel.
Sometimes it is easy to forget the struggle the Jews had during the Holocaust and the brutality of the Nazis during World War II. A very few found a way to escape Auschwitz and the other concentration camps. This book will help to enlighten the readers and hopefully If enough read it this brutality will not need to happen again. Although as we watch the ISIS and other terrorists today It is happening and must be stopped.
Excellent book describing the experiences of Klara Wizel. It was a excellent follow up also of what happened to her afterword. The story is amazing. The escape is intriguing. The highlight in the book is the amazing escape. I only wish the book had elaborated more on that. How can you make a hole in the wall and not get caught? What were others who were with her in that room thinking when she was busting out. Was there reaction? Why didn't anyone follow her? Why was there no guards outside. How was it that she wasn't noticed. After all she popped out. Wasn't she afraid of being caught? Sure she was. but I would like to have it elaborated. Was there ever any indication of the reaction of the Nazi's who had to have found a hole in the wall? I wish more of that part of the story was elaborated so I could have a better picture of it in my mind. Is the hole still there? This was a great book. If there was more elaboration on the escape I would definitely have give it a full five stars. To me it's worth 41/2 for sure.
wow, this book was amazing, and quite hard to put down, and stayed with you while you slept or through your day. I have read a lot of books on survivors but never about an upper class survivor from a well to do family. that makes it even harder for sure, for them to have everything taken from them and for them to still have the strength to go on. This woman was so brave and strong and I still can't believe how amazing it was that she was able to escape Auschwitz, but I don't want to spoil it for you. It was very brave. Great book!
It broke my heart. I cried throughout the entire book and thought , "this cannot happen again ! "The fear, the belief that was instilled into my ancestor's , the pain and the hope that rose to the front in such horrendous heartbreaking idiocy and hate.May we never ever be lead to such hatred ever again and I pray that we never forget the suffering of all who died and overcame .
In some ways I very much liked this book, and in some ways I didn't. Klara and her family were some of the thousands of Hungarian Jews sent to Auschwitz in the spring of 1944. Upon arrival, she immediately lost her parents, one brother, and one sister. She was left with her two remaining sisters, Rose and Hedy. The story goes over their life in Auschwitz, with Klara eventually being selected by Mengele (the angel of death) to be gassed. Unlike most others, when Klara was selected she looked right into Mengele's eyes although she had been warned not to. She wanted to look directly at the man who had killed part of her family. I thought that was so brave, not many people could do that. Amazingly enough, Klara was able to escape the building where she was being held. As some others mentioned, I too wish the escape was more clearly explained. It kind of leaves you hanging. One thing that Klara said really impressed me. She said as the Nazi's reduced the prisoners to nothing it made it easier for them to kill them. How very true, the worse the prisoners looked, the Nazi's would clearly be correct in disposing of them. I would have given five stars, but at times I thought the writing drifted a bit. Still, a good read.
This is a very well written book of an Auschwitz survivor and the escape of this Josef Mengele - sentenced to death, young lady.It is also about the celebration of life and perhaps the life-sustaining beliefs this young girl - young woman had ingrained from her parents a siblings.Well worth the read and very thought provoking.A "should read" for everyone. Remember, this occurred from 1939 - 1945. Less than one hundred years ago, one generation ago and happening elsewhere, even today.
How flawed were the Germans, Poles, Hungarians, Austrians and the others who harbored within themselves such hatred, greed and brutality. Ignited by a madman, they attempted to destroy a people who they subconsciously envied for their intelligence, success, morals and families. Yet, that people has survived and by telling their story, has issued fair warning of what man is capable of. Never again!
