World War II: The Resistance

France fell to Hitler's forces in less than two months. It was not until 1942 that widely dispersed underground organizations would band together to form a united opposition to the occupying Germans. It was not until then that resistance would become the Resistance - a disciplined multi-national movement that would play a significant part in the outcome of World War II.In each occupied nation, resistance groups would grow, gathering and sending information to London, planning increasingly complex sabotage operations, and assisting thousands of people, particularly Jews, in fleeing Nazi-occupied territories. Their actions would eventually become a focused counteroffensive against the German army in 1944, when Allied troops gathered in Great Britain to prepare for the invasion of France. As their widespread activity weakened German outposts in France and other occupied countries, the Allies would gain the foothold they needed to win the war. This is their story.

This book is a good starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the Resistance in Europe during World War II. It isn't particularly deep, nor does it have a lot of supporting material in terms of photos, notes or a bibliography. However, it tells many basic stories in a straightforward and very readable manner as it carries the tale of the Resistance through from the early parts of the war on to VE-Day in many of the occupied countries. It also gives a good idea of the bureaucratic difficulties those on-the-ground faced dealing with officials in London, the lack of coordination, and the heroism that drove these brave people on, often to their deaths. In at least a couple cases, the stories have inspired me to do more research on particular individuals, which is what I was hoping for. All in all, it was just the book I wanted it to be, and it delivered.

I had no idea The Resistance was active in so many countries. Mr. North presents many different groups throughout Europe, integrating them so that the reader is able to follow. These were brave people, and many of them and their families and villages suffered greatly because of their commitment. I was astounded to learn that for approximately every German death at the hands of the Resistance an equal number died in the Resistance. Commitment to a cause was in the heart of these people.

I learned about the different factions in France as well as the astounding price paid by so many in those dangerous days. There is enlighting details pertaining to the Dutch and Scandinavian resistance. Very good overview of this aspect of WW 2

WWII books are my favorite and I was kind with my rating. So this information brought a new light to that conflict. It told of some of the action and leaders. More of a book of facts, rather than a story. Later in the book more of a story evolved.It said Eisenhower commented the resistance shortened the war by 2 months. How many lives being saved would that translate to?

Very interesting book, and I could have read another volume if it was available. My grandmother had a very dear friend, when she and my mother and aunt, lived in France before World War II, and my grandmother always thought that her friend was in the resistance. We will never know, but these brave patriots from all over Europe deserve our utmost respect, no matter their political affiliation.

Considering that the purpose of the book is to provide a brief overview of a specific aspect of WWII and that the intent is not to be exhaustive or to go deeply into biographical background, this book does a very good job with the vital role of the resistance in helping the allies win the war. It will appeal to anyone interested in gaining a broad understanding of this aspect of the war. It ended quite abruptly; I would like to have had even a short epilogue on any public recognition of these heroes or their future service.

Well written, thorough story of resistance against Nazi rule of "conquered" countries, especially France. Suffering crippling hardship along with astonishing victories, these brave citizens were a crucial part of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Excellent read for history lovers.

An interesting and well-written account of the resistance actions throughout Europe. The chronological order of the book lets you watch as the different countries set up there organizations and begin fighting the occupiers. I learned some valuable information on the resistance organizations in France and other countries.
