Kiss Every Step

The German army swept into Poland on September 1, 1939, and four days later into Dora Szpringer's home town of Bendzin. To begin their reign of terror, the Nazis burned down Bendzin's beautiful synagogue with some 200 helpless Jews inside. Most Jewish families in Bendzin, and rest of Poland were completely wiped out by the Holocaust. The Szpringers were just an ordinary middle-class family, but through many incredible strokes of luck, or perhaps miracles, all seven of them survived. For an entire Jewish family in Poland to survive the Holocaust is amazing--likely unique. What is more remarkable is how they survived. This is their story.

As was the case with other reviewers, I learned about this book when I met Doris Martin. She and her husband were visiting the park where I work and went on my tour. I was talking about the hardships endured by the early settlers of Jamestown and their struggle for survival. Well, after my tour, the Martins and I conversed and I got to hear an amazing tale of personal survival.I purchased _Kiss Every Step_, but, for months, did not read it. I think it's because I was reluctant to have bad things happen to someone I liked so much, even though those bad things happened decades before.Well, I have read the book and I am so glad that I did so! Doris and her family survived frightening and abominable experiences, but they also realized that, if they were going to overcome the brutality and privations, they were going to have to cultivate their natural resourcefulness, plan ahead for problems as much as possible and be ever alert for situations which could be turned to their advantage. They were courageous, clever and undaunted! My library includes Ann Frank's diary and Viktor Frankl's _Man's Search for Meaning_. Mrs. Martin's book is right up there with these two classics in providing a first-hand account of life during the Nazi Holocaust. I am honoured to have met Mrs. Martin, and I am so glad I read her book.

Reveals the fascinating details behind the survival of a 7-member Polish Jewish family, a miracle in and of itself, from the Nazi Holocaust, an event almost unparalleled in that era. Highly recommended for those interested in a real story of 'being there' in a age of obscene cruelty.

I've read many Holocaust survival stories, all of which are compelling. Kiss Every Step, however, is unique if only because all seven members of the Szpringer family of Bendzin, Poland survived. Having this knowledge while reading the book, helped to relieve some of the sadness that usually accompanies these reads. Of particular interest to me, is that despite the frequent statements of luck or fortune being on their side, and there are frequent examples of this as they repeatedly narrowly escaped the Nazis, there is not a big presence of "God". One thing that always amazes me in Holocaust survival accounts is the ongoing faith that people maintain, even in the face of terrible pain, suffering and what might be called "bad luck." Despite the Szpringers having a great amount of "good luck," it impressed me that the credit wasn't repeatedly given to "God". Whether or not this has to do with what I felt was a unique tone - somehow more positive, lighter, and open at the same time - than usual, I don't know. But the book was a joy to read, despite the inherent horrificness of the subject matter.

This memoir is a very rare story about an entire Jewish family from Poland, who, although were split up in the holocaust in various hiding places and dangerous travels, survives the holocaust. The memoir begins with the eldest daughter, who takes her mom's place and goes to concentration camp for duration of war. This excellent book, throughout the chapters, gives you written insight by a few members of the family as to where they were and how they got through that time as well. As the book states, it is truly a miracle to have a family of, I believe, 7 people all survive the pogroms and the annihilation during said Holocaust. The last thing I think is important about this book is that, although there may not be as much violence and "gore" of what happened during that time, the book is quite memorable.

An amazing story of a family's constant struggle, during WWII, to escape the unbelievably efficient, ruthless and evil Nazis. It is a very worthwhile read for addicts, like me, of Holocaust survival stories.

An Amazing Story from the darkest time of World War 2. How often can you read a story of a miracle that saves a whole family from the clutches of death. A story that can bring hope to any person at anytime! A Must read for every person. From start to finish you will the pain, fear, love, and hope that Doris and her family went through. A true story in the Darkest Day.

This is one of the many books that I have read about the Holocaust. I really enjoyed this family's story. The fact that the entire family was able to to survive so many horrifying events for so many years is truly amazing. I also liked the way the book was written with each family member telling his own story. I highly recommend this book.

I met the most amazing lady today. very passionate and very articulate about her most amazing story. I met Doris Martin in a coffee shop in northeast cambodia where she told me her story. i haven't read her book yet, but can't wait to get my hands on it. I recommend it based on the conversation i had with her. I was moved to see her compassion for the hurting hearts here in cambodia and how their loses resembled each other. I will read it soon and bring further comment later. she's the real deal!
