(This review is for the [apparently] few women who find themselves having their entire lives yanked out from under them by an unexpected Military divorce. Those of you who haven't had the same experience ...don't judge until you have walked in our shoes.)I wish this book had been around in 2009. I had to learn the hard way--by living through a military divorce. My former husband had already done 1 hitch & got out before I met him, then he went back in before we got married. It didn't matter to me then, and I'd do it all over again because he will always be the great love of my life...I wouldn't have missed it for the world. We were happily married. I loved him (still do), I loved the military (still do) & I loved Military Life (miss it). I genuinely felt part of a large extended family. EVERY Base we went to felt like home. When we had been married for 10 years, we did the math: he had been gone for 5 of those 10 years, and that trend never changed. I accepted that as part of the deal going in. I was the self-reliant type who learned quickly that it was the wife's job to shovel the driveway & mow the lawn...and raise the kids. I was repeatedly told (by the military) that I was a valued & important part of the Military Family...my spouse couldn't do his job without me, they said. He served his 20+ and retired. And, as military marriages all too often go, things went downhill after retirement. Unfortunately, one person wanting to stay married doesn't work.25 years of marriage means nothing. If you were NOT married to him for ALL 20 of his FULL 20 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY: THERE ARE NO--LET ME REPEAT--NO--BENEFITS. If you live in a 'community property' state, you might get a small percentage of his retirement pay each month.
