What a fascinating couple...and more particularly, what a loyal and long-suffering wife! Beginning as early self-trained archaeologists in the Maya region, they are little remembered today, in no small part because of Augustus' virtual making up of history with tall tales of people who never lived. Their published work suffered from being selectively sourced to support the fantastic vision of "history" he formed and they both supported. Yet despite the sometimes hilarious invented royal characters, the two accomplished important early work when so little was known of the silent ruins in the Yucatan. Desmond makes this story move along, and does a good job placing the Le Plongeons in the context of their time.
I've owned this book for many years. I reread it yesterday and it's just as fascinating as I always. The pictures and drawings serve as the scientists' ghostly voices. The writers provide something the Le Plongeons perhaps never had in their lifetimes: a fair and balanced critique.
