I remember the first time I read about the travels of Mr. Catherwood and his partner John Lloyd Stephens. My copy, a library edition, had photos of the artwork of Mr. Catherwood. But to see them in color, and at a much larger size...I again, was blown away.I will enjoy this book for the remainder of my life. A treasure it is.
This is a wonderful trip of 19th Century Indiana Jones, Mr Frederick Cathewood to the different cities of the Maya. This large size art book full of colorful drawings and good text so that reader can follow along. This collection of masterpieces shows incredible details in the structure and construction. The art of the New World equals to that of the Old World!. It is worth quoting from the book with the impact impression (p.115): America, say historians, was peopled by savages; but savages never reared those structures, savages never carved these stones . . . Architecture, sculpture, and painting, all thearts which embellish life, had flourished in this overgrown forest, orators, warriers and statesmen, beauty, ambition and glory, had lived and passed away".The art masterpieces from this book are memorable and eternal! I left my heart in the lost cities of the Maya!
I read this years ago and since have read Catherwood and Stephens at least twice more. Also, I have been fortunate to travel to Tikal, Tulum, Uxmal and Chichen Itxza. The lost cities are so beautifully drawn and written about you are ready to leave and see for one's self. Absolutely on of the finest, written travel and exploration books when the United States was coming of age.
