I've been checking the prices on paperback editions of the Heimskringla for months, debating whether to spend the money or not, wanting it, putting it in the cart and then changing my mind... I'm glad I checked for kindle copies and found this one, because it was well worth the read, full of great info and was really decently edited. Certainly worth downloading!
However, this is such at variance with other translation (and, indeed the archaeology of the Norse) that I am not willing to give it a higher rating. Nonetheless, it does contain snippets of information not present in other translations and I would be loathe to give it fewer than three stars in case some of that additional information is important. One must be very careful with judgements based on partial information.
If this is your first go at Snorri's Heimskingla, OK. It's affordable, but my recommendation comes with reservations. If you want his Edda, this will disappoint. The Dovre reprint of Heimskringla has an in depth introductory section to Snorri and his world that this one doesn't. The Dovre ed. also has more of Snorri's actual Heimskringla than this one.As for the Edda, this ed. only contains the first third of Snorri's work, the Gylfaginning or 'Deluding of Gylfi' and a small fragment of the second third, Skaldskaparmal (language of poetry). The final third, Hattatal, (list – and explanations - of verse forms) is entirely absent.Norse verse is structured with internal rhymes, half rhymes, and metaphors called kennings to make them easier for their intended audience to remember. Sleipnir, Odin's eight legged horse is a kenning, its eight legs being those of four men bearing the fallen warrior to the funeral pyre and on to Vallhol. For the Edda get the Everyman paperback ed. translated and edited by Anthony Faulkes. http://www..com/Edda-Everymans-Library-Snorri-Sturluson/dp/0460876163?ie=UTF8&keywords=Edda%20faulkes&qid=1464117432&ref_=nav_signin&s=books&sr=1-1In this ed. Skaldskaparmal is roughly 20 pages. In (my old paper copy of) Faulkes it's 105 pages with Snorri listing all manner of kennings poets used for warriors, battles, blood, ships, weapons, Valkyries, the sea, wolves, ravens, etc.Online is an extensive Lexicon of Kennings - [...] - cataloguing and translating almost 3700 references. If you want a real look inside the Viking mindset Faulkes translation of Snorri's Edda is my pick over all the other original lit. It'll redefine poetry for you forever.
This is a great addition to my library. I was pleased to find my kindle will read it to me.
Great addiction to any Viking history collection. Really enjoyed the mythical tales.
