The 17 waltzes comprising this volume are among Chopin's most popular compositions. Composed over a period of 20 years (from 1827 to 1847), only eight waltzes were published during Chopin's lifetime. Many of the others were written as gifts for women with whom he was acquainted. This Practical Performing Edition is clearly spaced for ease in reading and contains a thematic index. Also included is an outstanding CD recording from the Naxos label by internationally renowned artist Idil Biret. She has made more than 70 recordings and has received numerous awards including: Lily Boulanger Memorial, Boston; Harriet Cohen - Dinu Lipatti gold medal, London; Chevalier de l'Ordre du Merite, France; State Artist, Turkey and many others.

I am collecting all Alfred Masterwork Editions. All the books are well edited with a lot of information and footnotes. This Waltzes also good edition too, easily read and paper quality also good. But the only downside of this book is it's not plastic comb edition, it's glued edition... that's difficult to lay flat on my piano's music stand. And after repeated use, the spine tend to break.. I don't know why Alfred don't use plastic comb on this.
The print color is too light - rather grey than black. Harder to read.Can not stay open on music stand by itself.
Another very good entry in the Alfred Masterwork series. It is a 'Practical Performing Edition'. It contains the eight waltzes published during Chopin's life, and eleven published posthumously. The editor has used the versions of the posthumous waltzes published by Jules Fontana shortly after Chopin died, as he considers them the best known versions. As a practical edition, historical notes are absent, and the notes on performance are rather short, too, being limited to occasional footnotes about primarily how to execute trills and other ornaments. The text is up to Alfred's usual standards, with sharp, dark typesetting and a spacious layout. This ed. has a CD, but I have my preferred performances of Chopin, so I have never listened to this CD. I agree with another reviewer that I wish this was a plastic comb binding instead of glued. Overall, a solid edition, but not a definitive one.
