War Of The Mountain: Israelis, Christians And Druze In The 1983 Mount Lebanon Conflict Through The Eyes Of A Lebanese Forces Fighter

The 'War of the Mountain,' which the Lebanese commonly call 'harb al-jabal,' refers to the 1983 conflict in Mount Lebanon’s Chouf and Aley regions. The conflict was another Syrian attempt to control Lebanon and one of the worst chapters in the 1975-1990 Lebanon War; it was also about the old and complex relationship between the Christians and the Druze, the two communities that were at the center of modern Lebanon’s formation. After Israel entered Lebanon in 1982 to expel the Palestine Liberation Organization, three military forces became present on the same ground in Chouf and Aley: the Israeli army, the (Druze) Progressive Socialist Party led by Walid Junblatt, and the (Christian) Lebanese Forces whose troops in Chouf and Aley were led by Samir Geagea. This book is an edited translation of 'Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham' written in Arabic by Paul Andary, a former Lebanese Forces military official who participated in that conflict and wrote the horrendous story of what happened from its historical, political, military, and human aspects. 'Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham' was published in 1985 and remains in demand to this day.

This was a very well done work about a specific battle between the Christians, Druze, Syrians, PLO and Israelis in an area outside of Beirut. One must take into account the very sectarian viewpoint of the author, who is a Christian, and views everything through that prism. That in itself is illuminating about the very nature of Lebanese society and its factional nature. The author describes in detail the main battle between Christian LF and Druze forces which is brutal where both sides think nothing of mass murder, kidnapping, torture, ethnic cleansing, and limited genocide. Their mentality towards warfare is that the enemy's population base is a legitimate target and can be targeted with indiscriminate artillery, sniping, and armor attacks as part of their ethnic cleansing campaigns which is synonymous with their form of warfare. This is a good read, translated from the original Arabic, which describes the political, social, and military events in detail which the author personally participated in. 5 stars.

it's so true , I recommend this book to those who wants to understand what the LF went through in the Mountain war , and when others were enjoying life . big Salute , and respect from the heart to all those who died in the Mountain , September 06 1983 Kfarmatta you will always be remembered .

A well detailed book. I have read the arabic version originally in 1985. All true facts are described through historical details. The english version is just as captivating as the arabic one. Once you start reading you can't stop. Highly recommended.
