Dawn Over Oman

Oman is one of the most beautiful and deservedly popular countries in the Middle East, a thriving state with a sound, oil-based economy, a member of the Arab League and the United Nations. Yet a few years ago it was one of the world's backwaters and visitors were not encouraged. The turning-point, the dawn in the country's fortunes, came with the take-over of power by Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1970, since when Oman has been emerging like a butterfly from a chrysalis. Pauline Searle worked in Oman as a correspondent for Reuters from 1968 to 1977. In Dawn Over Oman she takes the reader round the country, from the rugged Musandam peninsula in the north to the previously troubled province of Dhofar in the south. She builds a bridge between historical Oman and the Oman of today, she describes the awesome scenery and the friendly people, she touches on the natural history and on the indigenous arts and crafts, and she recounts the exciting story of an emerging nation; but above all she helps the reader to understand the love which Oman inspires in a way which few other countries do.
