The book was excellent! Benito Perez Galdo wrote many short stories like this one which are a good way to introduce Spanish speaking students to Spanish literature. The book arrived on time and the. Great buy!

I was encouraged to download this to my Kindle Fire after reading the 8 preceding glowing reviews in Spanish, which all--now that I look back on it--have similar wording and phrasing.This edition is apparently based upon an 1897 publication produced by Ginn and Company for English-speaking Americans learning Spanish. There are some pages of Intoductory notes in English that outline the Life of Perez Galdos and his work; but they provide little clue why an Anglo student struggling with Spanish in today's Middle America should care about the protagonist Pepe Rey, a somewhat clueless engineer left to himself in the boonies of 19th Century Spain. There is also a "contexto historico" in Spanish at the end of the book, but it mostly repeats what the English-language Introduction said earlier.There are good reasons to care, but they are elucidated in another publisher's version, namely the notes and introduction provided by Roldofo Cardona for Dell's Laurel Language Library edition of the novel (Published in 1965, and--alas--my copy is falling apart).The most disappointing aspect of this edition was the weird line breaks throughout the entire text of the novel itself, making the whole work scan like a modern-day experimental poem! On my Kindle, I can say that Perez Galdos' words come out looking more ugly than they do in the sample. Try another version!

The pages are not numbered, the letter size is miniature and the cover image is distorted... The novel is a classic though...

This sucked! It's the size of a school workbook! Its enormous! I hate it!
