The Dolly suite, Opus 56, Gabriel Faure's collection of six piano duets (for one piano, four hands), shows his lighter side as he portrays several scenes and moods of childhood. This suite got its name from Helene "Dolly" Bardac, the young, petite daughter of a friend of Faure's. Edited by Gail Lew and James L. There are too many obvious typos in this edition. Don't they have someone proofreading these things? Are all Belwin editions this bad?
This edition makes a large error, as to Dolly's identity. Yes, she was the child of singer Emma Bardac, but did not gain fame as "Chou-Chou," Debussy's step-daughter. Chou-Chou was in fact, the daughter of Emma and Claude Debussy, and to whom Debussy's "Children's Corner Suite" is dedicated. She tragically died a few months after Debussy, at the age of about 13, whereas, Dolly de Tinan (nee Bardac) lived to a ripe old age. I certainly wouldn't recommend this edition with such a poor grasp of the facts.
One of my favorite piano duets. The edition is clean and clear. Very well edited. A good student-teacher project.
