I got this book, AFTER I visited these places and I'm glad I did. Very effective way of comparing what one can see nowadays and what it must have been like in its time. Useful before travelling, after or even if only interested in finding out more about the region. Perfect size book and very easy to consult. A friend saw my copy and immediately ordered one for herself. It is that interesting. Recommend highly
Overlays of the past and present are fantastic! Gives a wonderful visual overview of Petra, Jerash, Amman. Worth every penny!
I purchased this book before I traveled to Jordan. It gave me some background information on what I would be seeing. I assumed this book would be widely available in Jordan but I never saw it. I wished I would have brought it with me on my trip to see the sketch drawings against the current ruins. The drawings really added to my understanding of the ruins and structures.
This book made the sights come alive. I was able to picture what it would have looked like back in the day. Normally, I just see a couple of columns and pretend to be impressed. It is the only guide book that we took on the actual day and other travelers commented that they wished they had one too. It has also been a great book to have once we are back from the trip-- I have enjoyed flipping through it and reminiscing about the different places and buildings. If you are going (or want to go) to Jordan-- this is a great book to have. As a side note, I have traveled all over the world and Jordan, particularly Petra, is one of my all time favorite spots.
Loved this book as a quick guide. The overlays added to the visual effect. I acrually carried this with me on a hike through Petra and was able to identify several locations by the photos.
Jordan: Past and Present: Petra, Jerash, Amman is an easily handled (i.e. not huge) spiral-bound book of wonderful photos and clear overlays which compare and contrast the 'now' and the 'then' of these ancient sites. The views are stunning. There is also wonderful, informative text. A must for any traveler to Jordan, or an interested armchair traveler.
