This book frames the conflict as one of competing nationalisms, Israeli-Zionist and Palestinian, products of the rise of nationalism generally during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and sharing much with those other movements. Gelvin does a great job showing the two sides' perspectives, which is the key to understanding this issue - how each side's historical narrative justifies their beliefs and actions, and vice-versa. True believers on both sides will be put off, but those looking for a balanced, general intruduction will learn plenty.
I am a student at UCLA majoring in History. Last summer, I had an opportunity to visit Israel/Palestine and read this as preparation. James Gelvin's book is the most objective and factually based account that I have encountered as a student and someone who visited the region. Great for anyone seeking to understand the conflict or even enhance their understanding of it. Truly a great text and enjoyable read with good humor. Highly recommended!
Well written, informing history of a difficult part of the world to govern. The author does a very good job of explaining the slow progression of mistakes and illusions on both sides of this never ending conflict. The author cites an extensive list of sources at the end of each chapter. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an objective history of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
Easy to read, it takes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a succinct, but clear historical point of view. The authors opinion are impartial and direct, criticizing both parties and many orders for their inability to reach a common ground, and stating that is unlikely to happen. I enjoyed the historical facts that justify the roots of the conflict. Worth reading
This is real history, not political fantasy land.
I used this book for a research paper. It was a great resource and also an interesting read.
Excellent reading. It gives you a thorough understanding of this long lasting conflict
