Brahms was a capable pianist and a brilliant composer. His piano works mostly fall on the upper intermediate to the summits of technical difficulty. His technical exercises can be a way of accessing his works, especially many of the awkward finger/hand positions and cross-rhythms that are ubiquitous in his pieces. They are not "concert etudes" but a collection of straightforward exercises with some innovations well suited for the Romantic repertoire. I suggest that an advanced teacher supervise the selection and proper execution of these exercises. This Alfred edition is inexpensive and good enough to acquire.
Fantastic book!! I would recommend this for experienced pianists who are in need of a good warm-up. This keeps your fingers nimble and strong with a wide range of exercises. Also, if you play a lot of Brahms, you'll see some of these patterns in his solo pieces and his concertos, which proves very helpful in learning those pieces.
My piano instructor asked me to buy this book, so I figured I would try . The book appears to be in new condition and there are no problems with it.
