Horror In Hocking County

Dale Johnston was arrested, tried and convictedfor the dismemberment murders of his stepdaughter, Annette Cooper, and her fiancé, Todd Schultz. He was sentenced to die in the electric chair. His conviction by a three-judge panel was later reversed by the Ohio Court of Appeals and that decision was subsequently upheld by Ohio's Supreme Court. However, the original question still remained: Was there a reasonable doubt?

I followed this story as it was playing out in SE Ohio, and later as Dale Johnson was "pardoned." Many, people including me, were left wondering what really happened. Thank goodness for Don Canaan's book. (I actually searched for such a book on and off for years after the case fell off the front page). His book sheds light on small town justice in 1980's rural Ohio, where I grew up. As I've aged I've come to believe there are a lot of strange-acting people, like Johnson. That doesn't make them murders. Just different.
