This text is an updated and enhanced version of the primary textbook utilized by Dr. Foxvog during his tenure as a Lecturer in Assyriology at the University of California, Berkeley. In his remarkable voice, one which echoes his own (I was a Graduate student of his over a decade ago), Dr. Foxvog illumines the complexities and, especially important, the most recent scholastic developments of Sumerian grammar. By no means comprehensive (it is an "Introduction", after all), it allows for a systematic overview into the Sumerian linguistic system, while being immensely readable and intelligible. Use of this Grammar will allow one to readily engage more monumental grammars readily. This by NO means should be considered a devaluation of the inestimable benefit of this text--Dr. Foxvog fills an entrenched hole in the development of future scholars of the Sumerian language, and by extension, all of Assyriology. It is with this text that I highly recommend one's entre into this most important, unique, and rewarding of academic disciplines! Dr. Foxvog's Grammar well deserves to become THE introductory text utilized by professors and students in their classes!
Excellent book, easy to learn from given the intrinsic difficulty of the subject.. I took off one star because the print of this book, though precise, is much too light and thin for the white paper, though the book is well bound.
Clear explanation of the grammar. A reasonable amount of exercises. It would have been useful, however, if the demarcations between exercises and grammatical explanations had been clearer. This book should be accompanied by the Basic Sumerian Glossary, but is still useable without it with a little creativity on the part of the user. The book does not teach the cuneiform characters in their wedge shapes, but only the grammar with its myriad numbered forms of duX..
I was extremely pleased with this book. It is a helpful tool for the student of the Sumerian language.
