Más que como novela, destaca por la habilidad del autor para transformar el conocimiento histórico en un relato. César Vidal no sólo construye una historia creíble basándose en los pocos datos históricos conocidos sobre ibn Gabirol, sino que nos traslada a la vida cotidiana de hace casi mil años gracias a sus conocimientos de historia social, económica y cultural, haciéndolo de un modo ameno pero preciso. Puede considerarse equiparable al " cuadro de costumbres" de Sanchez Albornoz "una ciudad de la España cristiana hace mil años"
